Top 10 Masked Wrestlers

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Recently,  C.M. Punk found himself on the losing end of a match which stipulated that he must shave his head.  So we all wondered just what he would look like when he showed up on Smackdown without his long oily hair.  But Punk threw us a curve ball.  He pulled the famous, hide under a mask trick.  Now the Irony that Punk is now sporting a mask, after calling Rey Mysterio a coward for doing the exact same thing, is not lost on anyone.  But it did get me thinking about all the great masked Wrestlers that I have watched over the years.  So I compiled a list of what I feel is the top 10 best masked Wrestlers.  Now granted, I could have done a separate list just for Japanese, Mexican, and American Wrestlers, but I decided to just pick my favourites from all of the above.  Naturally some will be missed, or forgotten, but hey its MY list.  I of course welcome comments, and additions.  So here we go.

10)  The Spoiler.  I know what you are saying right now.  Who?  The Spoiler is a very little known wrestler who started his career in the mid 1950′s, at the age of 15.  His real name is Don Jardine.  I remember watching this guy way back in the late 70′s and early 80′s.  And there was one thing about him that made him stand out, which I will explain in a moment.  Why is he in the top 10?  Well, for two reasons.  The first, is that he, along with King Kong Bundy, joined forces with a then unknown tag team called The Road Warriors, and Jake “the snake” Roberts, to form the original Legion Of Doom.  The second reason is for a certain move that he was famous for.  In the mid 80′s, the Spoiler was famous for walking the top rope.  A move he taught to a certain Mark Calaway…aka, The Undertaker !  I guess “Old School” is even older than most people know.

9)  Abyss.  The Monster of TNA,  may be a lot of things.  A Mick Foley (as Mankind) rip off.  a very big Hulk Hogan Fan, and even a gluton for punishment.  But one thing he is not, is somebody to be messed with.   Abyss has evolved in many ways over the years in TNA, and I look forward to seeing him dominate again as a true monster, but as far as masked men go, Abyss is slowly carving out his own legacy.

8)  Kane…  In the early days of his career, when he actually wrestled under a mask, Kane really was a walking nightmare.  Billed as the younger brother of The Undertaker, he tore through competition like a buzzsaw.  Now of course he no longer wears the mask, and some will argue that he just isn’t the same without it, but for the time that he did have it on, he was a fearsome sight.

7) Mankind….Yes, Mick Foley has had a bad case of multiple personality dissorder in his career.  Cactus Jack, Dude Love, Mick Foley, and of course…Mankind.  But while he was under the mask, there really was something special going on.  He seemed to delve into a dark side of his personality and bring it out in the ring.  Not to mention the fact that he did some really great interviews.

6)  Vader…  Leon White…aka, Big Van Vader, was a whole different class of masked man.  A Super Heavyweight, who could pull off moves such as a moonsault, as easily as something as devastating as a powerbomb.  In fact Vader delivered a powerbomb to Mick Foley on a concrete floor outside the ring, which resulted in a concussion and temporary loss of feeling in his left hand and leg.

5)  Ultimo Dragon… Dragon is certainly one of those wrestlers you have to watch to really appreciate.  Probably not know in the U.S. as much, unless you watched WCW, he is a huge personality in Japan.  Real name…Yoshihiro Asai, he is responsible for popularizing the “Asai Moonsault.”   Not to mention being the only professional wrestler in the world to hold 11 Titles at the same time.

4)   Tiger Mask …..Actually, Tiger Mask began as a Japanese Manga in 1968, which was adapted into a series in 69.  In real life the name has been used by a succession of wrestlers over the years as a gimick.  And to this day, the mask, which is made to look like a Tigers head, is one of the most instantly recognizable trademarks in Japan.

3)   Jushin “Thunder” Liger…Really, I could do an entire post on how many organizations this guy has competed for, and fill pages with his accomplishments.  Seriously, if you haven’t heard of Liger, or seen him wrestle, then you really aren’t a wrestling fan.  Even if you do know him though, do yourself a favour and look him up, it makes for an interesting, if not long, read.

2)  El Santo…Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta….aka…El Santo (The Saint) along with Mil Mascaras, is easily the most famous and iconic of all Mexican Luchadores.  So much so that he has been refered to as one of greatest legends in Mexican Sports.  He had a career that spanned nearly five decades, during which time he became a folk hero, who appeared in comic books and movies.  When Santo died, he was buried with his mask, and his funeral was considered one of the biggest in Mexican History.

1)  Rey Mysterio Jr……Yes, I used the Jr, so we know which one I’m referring too.  But of course I can only be talking about the one and only, Rey Mysterio.  WWE superstar, future hall of famer, and easily the most popular masked wrestler ever in North America.  But because his popularity is Worldwide, I rank him as the #1  masked wrestler of all time.  And again, if you don’t know who he is, or if you haven’t seen him wrestle, then shame on you for calling yourself a Wrestling fan.

There you have it. My top 10 masked wrestlers list.  Feel free to add any comments you like.

WWE Over The Limit. Results/Review

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

From Detroit Michigan, in my own back yard, we have another of the WWE’s new Pay Per Views, Over The Limit.

The first match of the night saw a contrast of styles as the exciting Kofi Kingston faced the boring Drew McIntyre for the Intercontinental Championship.   In all fairness this was a decent enough match, with Kofi adding his usual high flying thrills to what would otherwise be another McIntyre snorefest.  In the end Kofi defeats Drew with his S.O.S. and we have a new Intercontinental Champion.  Of course after the match Drew whined that he wanted Teddy Long to reverse the decision, until Matt Hardy showed up and laid him out with a twist of fate.

Next up was Ted Dibiase vs R-Truth.   Much like the fist match, we have Dibiase who may have the looks, and perhaps a bit of skill, but definitely none of the charisma of his father.  And R-Truth who is at the very least, entertaining.  From what I understand, Dibiase suffered some sort of injury during the match.  Some are saying a concussion.  Which would at least explain why he seemed to be woozy through half the match.  Thankfully this one was short, with R-Truth getting the win.

C.M Punk vs Rey Mysterio.   Now we finally get to something good.  These two have had very good matches in the past, and this one was no different.  They also seem to come up with new moves and combinations that make each match a little different than the last.  The only low point in the match was a brief pause in the action when Punk accidentally got busted open and was being tended too. (please WWE, stop doing this during pay per views)  But aside from that, this was certainly one of  the highlights of the night with Mysterio getting the win, and Punk getting his head shaved.

The Hart Dynasty vs Chris Jericho and The Miz.   There really isn’t a whole lot to say about this one.  It was a solid match for both teams, but you just know that Jericho and Miz were thrown together to give the Harts somebody to face.  Overall though, it was a good match, with The Hart Dynasty retaining the Tag Titles.

Edge vs Randy Orton.    Good Grief, where do I start?  We keep coming back to this theme of good wrestler vs boring wrestler.  I like Edge, and this recent heel turn was a good idea, since I find he gets over more as a bad guy.  But then he is forced to have matches with a stiff like Orton.  I still can’t understand his popularity right now, but it is what it is.  Anyway, this one was about as good as you can get considering Randys frequent rest holds and such.  But its the ending that really had me laughing.  Ortons ritual of beating his fists on the mat just before he sets up an RKO actually ended up aggravating an injury that he got earlier in the match to the point where he couldn’t continue.  So, they ended up spilling out of the ring where Edge misses a spear and hits the retaining wall so they could both be counted out.  Wow!

Big Show vs Jack Swagger.   In a match that could make or break the early career of Jack Swagger as a World Champion, this one would have to be considered a failure.  Big Show is one of those guys that is hard to have a match with because of his size, so its always interesting to see how his opponent handles this.  A really good Wrestler can pull off a decent match with anybody, even Big Show.  And for the fist part of this match, it looked like Swagger was doing just that.  He held his own, and was looking good even when he was taking a beating.  But then the thing that ruins a match.  Swagger takes the Championship Belt and blasts the Big Show with it, and gets DQ’ed.  Seriously, this was done on a Pay Per View?  So we have a quick ending to what was starting to look like an okay match.

Maryse vs Eve Torres.   I honestly could care less about the Barbie Belt, but I really like Eve.  She has the potential to be the next great Diva in the WWE.  And with Micky James gone, they need her more than ever to step up.  Which tonight she did.  Maryse is always fun to watch, but tonight even her awesome hair flipping couldn’t get it done.  Winner, Eve.

Batista vs John Cena.     This one was being billed as Batista’s last match against Cena for the Championship.   Knowing that Batista was planning to take some time off pretty much told you in advance who was going to win this one, but finally tonight there was a match that was Pay Per View worthy.  I quit matches are fun because you can get away with anything, and brawl all over the arena, which these two did.  One highlight was Batista passing out to the STF, only to have Cena revive him with some bottled water.  Others included some brawling up in the crowd, and near the end, up on the stage where Batista tried to back a car into Cena.  (he can’t say I quit if you crush him with a car)  But the end saw Cena taking Batista up onto the hood of said car, and just as he set him up for an Attitude Adjustment, Batista quit.  But, Cena did it anyway and threw Batista off the hood of the car onto the stage….right through the stage.

In all, this was not a very good effort for the WWE.  But that ending was worth seeing.

Pre-Royal Rumble, thought’s and predictions

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

With the Royal Rumble less than a week away, I thought I would weigh in with my thoughts on the overall card itself, and how I think things might play out.  Like many of you, I do like to check out the most recent rumours and gossip, but when it comes to Pay Per Views, I try not to read them just prior to the show, so I can be surprised.  Especially since plans change so rapidly.  What somebody thinks is a possible spoiler, turns out to be nothing at all.  That being said, some of the recent things I have read, and watching the show’s leading up to the Rumble have me wondering if we are going to be getting a show with zero surprise factor at all.  First off, we have the ECW Championship being defended.  Christian vs Ezekiel Jackson.  Why on Earth Christian has been forced to sit this long in ECW is beyond me.  Sure he has been the Champion for quite some time, but he deserves to be on one of the main shows.  I see Christian losing this match simply so they can take the Title off of him in preperation for a move come draft time. Next up we have the Womens Championship match.  Michelle McCool vs Mickie James.  Normally I would think that James would win this one, just to finally put an end to the whole “Piggy James” nonsense.  But with talk of her releasing a Country album of all things, I have my doubts.  This might turn out to be a half decent match though, since these two can actually wrestle.  The first of the two World Title matches is The Undertaker vs Rey Mysterio.  Taker is in pretty rough shape these days, so I don’t see this being a very long one.  Rey will be fast, and make this look exciting, but in the end Taker wins and moves on to the main event at Wrestlemania.  The second Title defense is Sheamus, taking on Randy Orton.  Earlier I did a post on how I felt that Sheamus would not walk out of this match as Champion, because I did not see him headling Wrestlemania.  I still stand by that, but some rumours are going around about the Rumble match itself that puts a bit of doubt in my mind now.  And so that brings us to the Rumble Match itself.  As per usual, the build up has highlighted how this is every man for himself.  People making bold claims that they will win.  Silly over the top rope challenges, and teams having words with each other.  Teams like D.X.  And here is where things get a little strange.  The whole notion that if Shawn Michaels wins, he can get his shot at The Undertaker again.  And HHH, basically just wanting to win, because…..well, just because.  One rumour out there, has both men winning in a Tie, so that they both get what they want.  I certainly hope this doesn’t happen, as it cheapens the whole point of ” I am the one”  John Cena winning would simply be par for the course, but this scenario works for my prediction of Randy Orton having the Title.  Then there is Batista.  No doubt if he wins, its a rematch with The Undertaker.  But for some reason, I think that the Sean Michaels rematch would be pushed first.  As for a surprise winner?  I don’t see it happening, but I see Edge making his return at the Rumble.  I doubt he will win, but I think he will eliminate Chris Jericho, thus setting up a fine feud that could last all the way to Mania.  So, who do I pick as the overall winner?  If I must choose a name, I’ll go with Cena.  Not exactly going out on a limb with that one, but I see this Rumble being pretty much by the numbers anyway.
