Why is TNA ignoring the X-Division?

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

The TNA X-Division Title.  Once upon a time it was the very cornerstone of the company itself.  This was what set TNA apart from the WWE.  They even went as far as using a six sided ring to give their high flyer’s more ways to  pull off new and exciting moves.  But that was then, and this is now.

Back then, you had some of the biggest names in TNA making the X-Division the thing to watch.  A.J. Styles, Christopher Daniels, Samoa Joe, Petey Williams, and Low-Ki (now Kaval in WWE)  just to name a few.  It wasn’t unusual for an X-Division match to steal the show at a pay per view, and be more exciting than the main event.

So what happened?  Three little words.  Hogan and Bischoff.  Despite the last few weeks being better than average, and the recent improvements on Impact, the X-Division is still on the back burner.  Since the Hogan/Bischoff regime has taken over the focus has been all on the World Title, and the pushing of the heavyweights.  Now I do understand the importance of having a strong World Champion, and the building of new stars to challenge for that Title, but you should not kill the very thing that got the company noticed in the first place.  Especially since its those fans, the ones that started watching TNA because it was so different, that are starting to turn their backs on the show they once loved.   Why bother watching something that is now just like the WWE, but not as good, when you can just watch RAW or Smackdown?

So what can be done to fix this?   Well that answer is very simple.  Just allow the X-Division to do what it does best, and that is to have exciting matches.  There should always be at least one match on Impact, and a Title defence on every pay per view.   But how can this renewed focus begin?  Well for starters, they can bring back/start using the current talent that has been for the most part sitting the bench.  Homicide has already quit the company, so they should act fast before his actions trigger a domino effect among the others who are not being used.  People such as Eric Young,  Kiyoshi, Suicide (put somebody new under the mask), Amazing Red,  and Generation Me.  It would also be a great idea if they brought back something like the World X-Cup tournament.  Seeing talent from around the World compete, even if for a short time, in the X-Division is exactly the kind thing that would bring in some new fans, and remind the older ones why they started watching TNA in the first place.  It would also be a good excuse to bring back Petey Williams, but that’s just my opinion. ( I miss seeing my home town boy)

But one of the very first things that should happen, is to end this boring, tired, going nowhere angle of Doug Williams “schooling” the X-Division guys while sucking all the fun out of his matches.  Take the Title off of him, and lets get back to some real action.

A.J. Styles, your new TNA Global Champion

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

For months now we have had to suffer through watching “The Freak” Rob terry, carry the TNA Global Championship.  And as we all know, a Championship is only as valuable as its Champion, so in this case it was utterly worthless.  But not any more.

A.J. Styles is your new Global Champion.  This of course is the second time that Styles has held this Belt.  The last time was when it was still referred to as the “Legends Title”  Call it whatever you like, the fact of the matter is, now this Championship has a chance at being something truly worthwhile.  This is also the first bit of Gold for Ric Flair’s new stable, that he refers to as “Fortune”  Styles, along with Kazarian were named as the first two members of the group, and as we all saw on this past weeks Impact, they now seem committed to working together.  It was Kazarians interference that helped A.J. to win the Global Title after all.

Now the question will be, who else is going to be in Flairs group?   Beer Money have been running buddies, and guns for hire, for Flair in the past.  Desmond Wolfe seems desperate to prove that he belongs.  And there is the big man Matt Morgan, who could really use somebody like “Slick Ric” to keep him focused.  And lets not forget the Knockouts.  Flair likes Gold, and he loves women.  So it would seem fitting that he would want to add one of the Knockouts to his stable, and bring along another Championship.  Maybe Madison Rayne would be a good pick.

But speculation aside, what we know right now is that “Fortune” has its first Champion, and that man is A.J. Styles.  And we the fans now have a Global Champion with some real credentials, and incredible skill.  Lets hope that he can elevate this Title to where it deserves to be (second only to the World Heavyweight Title)  and that we can witness some excellent matches along the way.

Since this post was written, there has been a change.  Once again, somebody is listening to the fans, as The Global Championship is no more.  It always struck me as being somewhat redundant to have a World Champion, and a Global Champion.  But not any more.  As of now it will be known as the TNA, Television Championship.  I for one am very happy to hear this, as T.V. Titles have been around for a very long time, so there is at least a little bit of tradition that can go along with the newly named Title.

TNA’s New Top 10 Ratings For June

Friday, June 18th, 2010

The votes have been counted,  and the brain trust at the top of TNA have sat down and looked over their roster, and have come up with a new top ten ranking for the month of June.   I had a few issues with the first top ten that was announced, and this one is no different.  But this time around, they did a much better job, and the problem I have with the top ten has more to do with one of their “Champions”  So here is the current listing.

     10)   Kurt Angle.   9)  Desmond Wolfe.   8)   The Pope.   7)   Jay Lethal.   6)   Samoa Joe.   5)   Sting.   4)   A.J. Styles.   3-2-1)   Three way tie.  Jeff Hardy, Abyss, and Mr Anderson.

So lets take a quick look at the bottom five first.   Kurt Angle at number ten knocks Kaz out of the bottom spot, and this is Angles first step on his quest to defeat everybody in the top ten.  Desmond Wolfe drops from 6 to 9, and this isn’t much of a surprise since he hasn’t been doing well in his feud with Abyss, but he should still be ranked higher than the person ahead of him in the number 8 spot.  The Pope is out with an injury.  That he is still in the top ten is a bit of a stretch, and that he’s ranked higher than Wolfe just isn’t right.  Number 7 goes to Jay Lethal, who wasn’t even in the top ten last month.  This is a great start, and it looks like he will keep moving up as they begin to push this young star, and get him ready for the main event.  At number 6 we have Samoa Joe.  Last month I was shocked to see him stuck in the number 9 position, and predicted he would rise fast, and he has.  He still has to get back into the World Title mix a bit more, but I think by the time next months ratings roll around, he will be up near the top.  Finally, at number 5 is Sting.   This is right about where The Stinger should have actually been last month, but they wanted him in the main event for Slammiversary, so he got the top ranking.    I expect he will sink lower, as his feud with Jeff Jarret heats up, and the younger stars at the bottom start to move up.

Now for the top 5.  This one is a lot easier, since they did the three way tie for the top spot.  But at number 4 is A.J. Styles.  Styles has fallen two spots since last month, and this is pretty much what you would expect with all the chaos going on with him and Ric Flair, and the whole Stable that he is putting together.   As for the top 3.  Yep, we have a tie.  Jeff Hardy and Mr Anderson move up from 3 and 4, to being in the top spot, and Abyss jumps into the top 3, from his spot at number 5 last month.  I don’t have any problem with any of this, since Abyss was rated a bit low in my opinion last month, and the other two really didn’t change.  This is just a nice little way of setting up the 4 way match at the next Pay Per View.  Not having to commit to a top contender this month also buys them a little bit of time to see how things pan out with Hardy and his legal battles,  Mr Anderson being a good guy now, and Abyss going crazy again.

Now, as for my gripes with this months list.  Aside from what I said during my breakdown of the top ten itself, I really only have one.  And it is this.   Rob Terry, the TNA Global Champion, is not on the list.   That’s right, the person who supposedly holds a Singles Championship that seems to be secondary only to the World Title, is not in your top ten.   Don’t get me wrong, I think that Terry can’t wrestle any better than I can perform Brain Surgery, but he is still a Champion.  The Pope is sitting out with an injury, and he’s at number 8 ?    This speaks volumes as to how valuable that Championship really is.

Now to wait and see what happens next month.

TNA Slammiversary 2010 Results/Review

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

TNA had its annual celebration on Pay Per View, also known as Slammiversary.  This is supposed to be their version of Wrestlemania, and is the biggest event of the year.  Last year they brought it to California, but this year it stayed in the Impact Zone.  Personally I think they should always have their big events, such as this one, and Lockdown, on the road, but I’m sure this was a cost saving measure.  Either way, on to the show.

     Kurt Angle vs Kaz.   Winner….Angle.

This was Angles first step in making his way up the rankings, from contender # 10, up to contender #1.   In all this was a pretty decent match.  They didn’t have any real time to build up any storyline, but that didn’t much matter since Kurt will be moving on from one person to the next rather quickly.  I like Kaz, and if used properly he could be a future main eventer, but this match, while good, was just a stepping stone for Angle.

Douglas Williams vs Brian Kendrick.   Winner…Douglas Williams

The current situation with the X-Division Championship is starting to get a little boring.  I get the whole thing of Williams trying to prove to the high flyers that his style is superior, but they really need to make it a bit more interesting.   Brian Kendrick did a fine job  of keeping up with Williams mat based style, while still using his own high flying skills.  In all, it was a decent match, which saw Williams actually use a flying DDT to get the pin.  Perhaps this is the start of Williams having to resort to fighting fire with fire to keep his Title.

 Madison Rayne vs Roxxi….Winner…..Madison Rayne.

My previous post was about how TNA is dropping the ball with the Knockouts Division, and this match proved my point perfectly.   At the start of the match, Madison grabbed a Mic and complained how she had nothing to gain by defending her Championship against Roxxi, who has been in and out of the company for the last couple of years.  So, she convinces her to put her career on the line.   The match starts with Madison hitting Roxxi in the head with the Mic, and busting her open.  They go on to have one of the better Knockout matches I have seen in a while, with Madison eventually getting the win.   So now we have lost Roxxi, who didn’t find out about this stipulation, and her being let go by the company until she showed up at the Impact Zone that day.  Its getting to the point that Madison will stay the Champion forever, since there will be no other women to defend against..

Jesse Neal vs Brother Ray……Winner….Jesse Neal.

Brother Ray seems to work best when he is being a total jackass, and you just knew when this match started out that he was going to do a swerve.  He began by taking the Mic and apologizing to everybody for his actions, gave Neal a big hug and they all left the ring together.  Then of course Ray turns around and clocks Neal with a sucker punch, and throws him back into the ring for his beating.  And Jesse did get quite a beating.  Ray delivered some of the loudest chops I have ever heard, and he lit up just about every square inch of Neals body in the process.  Neal did mount some offence, but not much, until somebody appeared in the crowd.  Tommy Dreamer made a surprise appearance, and the distraction was enough for Jesse to hit a Spear and pick up the win.

Matt Morgan vs Hernandez…..Winner, Matt Morgan..via DQ.

The battle of the big men part 2.   Morgan comes out with a neck brace and a doctors note, and says he can’t compete tonight.  Naturally as he heads up the ring to leave he is attacked by Hernandez.   I have to say that Super Mex looks better than ever after taking some time off.  He is leaner, and moves even better than before.   The match itself wasn’t too bad, but it ended in a DQ when Hernandez just couldn’t handle the ref getting in his way, and tossed him aside.  I would love to see these two continue this feud, but put them in a cage.

     Abyss vs Desmond Wolfe…..Winner….Abyss

The feud between these two does not seem like it will be settled with this match.  As you would expect in a Monsters Ball match, there were weapons, broken glass, and blood.  Both men seemed to take a lot of punishment.   But in the end, it seems that Chelsea was the deciding factor in this one.  She was supposed to have a pair of brass knuckles in her purse for Wolfe, but when he opened it, they weren’t there.  She pulled them out of her top, and tossed them over Wolfes head to Abyss, who used them, and a black hole slam to pick up the victory.

Jay Lethal  vs  A.J. Styles…..Winner…..Jay Lethal.

As you would expect, this was the show stealer.   Both of these men have a tremendous amount of talent, and it was in full display in this match.  Normally I would have been surprised that Lethal won, except that they are really starting to push him right now, and this story line of A.J. disappointing Flair has to continue.  But still, this was a great match.

Hardy and Anderson  vs Beer Money.    Winners….Hardy and Anderson.

I’m not quite sure if they plan on keeping Hardy and Anderson together or not, but it seems that is the case after last night.   Part of me was expecting Anderson to turn on Hardy, and show that this entire “we’re buddies” thing was just a ruse.  But no such luck.  Beer Money is a great team, and they always put on good matches, and this one was no different.  I just hope that they will eventually stop getting jobbed out and get the Tag Titles back.  But for now, both teams did a fine job, and this match was one of the better ones of the night.

Rob Van Dam  vs  Sting…..Winner….Rob Van Dam

I was actually wondering if Sting was going to take the Title.  After all this talk, and some really good interviews that he did regarding the “Deception” in TNA.  But in the end, we didn’t get any of the answers that we were promised.  No veil was lifted, no revelations were made, just Sting doing his best to keep up with Van Dam.  This was a fairly short match as far as main events go, which is typically the case with Sting these days.  Lets face it, he is a legend, but he’s not as young as he used to be, and was only in this main event due to name recognition.  In the end though, we got RVD hitting the 5 Star frog splash for the victory.

My final thoughts are, that this was an average PPV.  I expected more for this being the big Anniversary Show.  And our big surprise being Tommy Dreamer showing up, was a bit of a let down.   Better luck next month…this was about a  C+  performance.

TNA’s first top 10 rankings. Did they get it right?

Friday, May 21st, 2010

This past week on Impact, Eric Bischoff finally announced the top ten rankings for the World Heavyweight Championship.  Now before I list it, and discuss whats right, and what seems to be wrong, it must be noted that Kurt Angle was originally in the top ten.  He was listed as #2, but took himself out so that he could challenge himself by facing every person in the top ten itself.  That being said, here is the current top ten list.  1) Sting  2) A.J. Styles  3) Jeff Hardy  4) Mr Anderson 5) Abyss 6) Desmond Wolfe 7) The Pope 8.) Rob Terry 9) Samoa Joe 10) Kazarian

Now let me start with the positive.  I agree with most of the top five.  With Angle taking himself out of the number 2 spot, everybody moved up one, and Kazarian filled the number 10 position.  I would question ranking Angle at number 2, ahead of the former Champion, A.J. Styles, but that is now a moot point.  On the negative side, I simply can’t understand making Sting the #1 contender.  He has been injured for months now and has done very little since Lockdown.  Now its my understanding that part of the ranking process is your past win/loss records, both with TNA, and with other companies.  That would certainly put The Stinger at the top of just about any list.  But the other side of it, which is the fans voting paints a different picture.  Here we find Jeff Hardy leading the voting board, followed by Desmond Wolfe, and Mr Anderson.    Now I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but it seems like the fans votes may be taken into consideration, but ranking Sting at the top of this list says more about back room politics than giving the fans the kind of main event they want.

Now for the second half of the top 10.  This part is about as fair as it can be I suppose.  I honestly would have ranked Desmond Wolfe ahead of Abyss for that number 5 spot, but with this whole thing they are doing with Abyss right now, I guess 6th place is good enough.  The Pope being in the number 7 position this soon after main eventing a Pay Per View seems a bit insulting.  But he is also on the injured list, and quite frankly I see him moving up fast.  Rob Terry being at number 8, and being ranked ahead of Samoa Joe is a joke.  The only reason for this is that Terry is the current Global Heavyweight Champion.  Because in no universe that I am aware of would he ever be considered better than Joe.   And Joe being at number 9 is also sad, but he hasn’t been around much lately.  Still, his past record speaks for itself.  I don’t see him staying at the bottom very long.   And speaking of the bottom, that brings us to number 10, Kazarian.  One can only assume that they are planning something big for Kaz, otherwise he would not be on this list at all.  Especially since Matt Morgan is no longer part of the tag team scene.

So, overall I would give this first top 10.  a B+   Its not perfect, but then again you can never please everybody.  Lets hope that they stick with a fair system, and listen to us fans so that we can get the kind of matches we want, and deserve.

TNA’s Destination-X. Preview

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Sunday March 21′st is the date for TNA’s Destination-X, pay per view.  It has been said that since Hogan and Bischoff have been running things, that a lot of people have been getting the short end of the stick, and that the X-Division isn’t being used to its full potential.  Well now is the time to show off what they’ve got.  Looking over the card we have 3 matches featuring X-Division wrestlers.  First up is a ladder match with Amazing Red, Kazzarian, Brian Kendrick, and Daniels.  This could easily be the best match of the night with these guys in the mix.  Then we have an ultimate-X  tag match between the Motor City Machine Guns, and Generation Me.  Again, another potential show stealer.  Unfortunately though, the last of the X-Division matches is my least favourite.  Doug Williams takes on Shannon Moore.  Why Moore was given a Title shot this fast is beyond me, but I don’t see him winning this one.  Hopefully this match is early, so we can forget about it fast.  Of course the Tag Titles are on the line.  And I  predict that Beer Money will finally get the gold again.  This will also allow Hernandez and Morgan to finally have that feud that we have all seen brewing.  Moving along, we have the Knockouts Title match between Tara and Daffney.  It seems that Tara can never hold on to that belt for very long, so we might just see an upset.  But I doubt it.  Now we come to the Global Championship.  I posted earlier about not really knowing where TNA stands with this Title, but putting it on the card is a step in the right direction towards defining it. Now if Brutus Magnus beats his former partner, Rob Terry, then we will have a Champion who can at least wrestle.  Now rounding out the rest of the card, we have some lousy match with Kevin Nash and Eric Young, facing Scott Hall, and Syxx Pac.  I seriously hope  “The Band” doesn’t win. I’m already tired of their antics.  One match I AM looking forward to, is Mr Anderson and Kurt Angle.  They have done a nice job of building this one up, and both of these guys can go.  This might turn out better than the main event.  Actually, unless something amazing happens, I don’t see Abyss and his magical ring, pulling off a good match with A.J. Styles.  That one may be the main event, but It’s far from the best match on the card.  In all though, this one shapes up rather well.  I for one am looking forward to it.

TNA’s Global Championship. Just what is it?

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Not so long ago TNA, or should I say, Booker T, introduced us to what was then called the “Legends” Championship.  And in its very short existance it has changed hands a few times, changed names once, and still has yet to have any real meaning or signifigance attached to it.  When it first showed up, it was owned by Booker, and he seemed to decide who he defended it against.  Sort of like Ted Dibiase did with his “Million dollar belt”  I guess you had to be legend, or at least be worthy, to get a Title shot.  Later on when Eric Young got possesion of it, he declared it the “Global Championship”  with the stipulation that it would never be defended in the U.S.  Which I’m sure was just supposed to bring heat on him as the leader of the now defunct World Elite group.  That brings us to the current holder of this strange Championship.  True to the stipulation, Rob Terry defeated Eric Young in the U.K. Since then it has been sort of defended once on Impact when Terry just had to pretty much pin Mr Anderson after he got jumped by Kurt Angle before their match.  So much for the, not defended in the U.S. part of it.  But the big question really is, just where does this Title sit in the order of things?  The main thing is the World Heavyweight Championship.  After that, the only other singles Title has been the X-Division championship.  Granted, the slogan for that one has always been, it’s not about weight limits, it’s about NO limits.  But seriously, this has for the most part been for the cruiserweight type guys to show off their tremendous skills.  So, in my mind, I think this new Title was meant to be a secondary Heavyweight Championship, on par with the WWE’s U.S., or Intercontinental Belt.  But if that is the case, then do us all a favour and do 2 really important things.  Tell the fans that this is what it means, and secondly, put it on somebody who can actually wrestle, and defend it often.  At the very least when A.J. Styles had it, you had somebody who is the  best, making it seem important.  He then went on to become the World Heavyweight Champion.  You see, your Titles are only as good as the people that hold them.  It has always been this way, and it always will be.  Right now, with Big Rob as your Global Champion, this Title has no meaning.  Hopefully the new people behind the scenes recognize this, and do what needs to be done to turn this non Title, into a legitimate Championship.

Can Sting really work as a bad guy?

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

It has been only a week, but the image of Sting, beating down Rob Van Dam with a baseball bat is still fresh in my memory.  But then again, so is the last time “The Icon” tried to become a bad guy.  It wasn’t all that long ago that Sting was a member of the Main Event Mafia.  But we all knew that he just didn’t fit in.  Nobody was buying it, and eventually, when it was obvious that the idea wasn’t working, he got dumped from the group.  His primary reason for even joining the MEM, was that the young guys in the locker room lacked respect.  That they simply wanted the business handed to them on a silver platter, and he was going to beat some respect into them.  Then, just before he takes an extended leave, he convinces A.J. Styles not to quit wrestling.  Helps him win the World Title.  Then loses to him at their biggest Pay Per View of the year.  Now, the Stinger is back.  And I for one and very curious to hear how they are going to explain this sudden change of character.  The attack on Hogan and Abyss, which in turn helped out A.J. and Ric Flair.  And of course the relentless beating of RVD.  Neither one of these makes much sense.  You would think that after seeing what has become of Styles, that he would be the last person he would help.  Either way, this has been tried before, and it has failed.  Sting did get quite a bit of heat for the RVD thing, but that would be expected.  I just can’t wrap my head around why TNA would like to have Sting work as a bad guy?  Maybe they think that, if it worked for Hogan back in WCW, then it should work now.  Or perhaps they don’t feel that the bad guys have enough strong players on their side?  I guess we will all find out on Monday Night.  But I for one, don’t see this lasting very long.

TNA. Against All Odds 2010 Review. (Spoilers)

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

First off I have to say that I don’t usually post spoilers with my reviews, but because of the nature of this particular Pay Per View;  the eight man tournament, I felt it was necessary.  Secondly, I have to say that thus far I have noticed an improvement in the quality of the last two PPVs.    So let us get on with the mathces.  The first out of the gate was The Pope vs Desmond Wolfe.  These two have had at it a couple of times, and just like their prior matches this one was good.  Naturally because this was a tournament, we couldn’t expect the first round match ups to be very long, but for the time they had they put on a good show.  And you always see something original out of Wolfe.  But this time out, The Pope got the win, and advanced.  Next up was the Tag Team Champions going head to head.  Hernandez vs Matt Morgan.  On paper this looked like it would be very interesting.  Unfortunatley it was not .  Morgan is capable of pulling off a good match, but sometimes he is only as good as his opponet.  And Hernandez is still just too green.  They lumbered around the ring, and did their thing, but in the end Morgan got the victory, and at the same time he managed to screw Hernandez over a bit, thus planting the seed for their eventual demise (in my opinion)  The third first round match was Mr Anderson vs Kurt Angle.   This was certainly one of those matches that I wish had more time.  It was very good, but if it was a main event, it could have been excellent.  Angle still has lots of go left in him, and Anderson just has that ability to get the crowd going, while still putting on a great match.  After this one was done, I just could not help asking myself, why in the hell did the WWE ever let Anderson go? And yes, somehow Anderson was able to beat Kurt Angle .  Now on to the last of the first round matches.  This one featured Mick Foley vs Abyss.  The stipulations for this match were simple. It was no DQ.  And as an added bonus, both men were told that if the barbed wire bat was not used, that Abyss would be unmasked on Impact.  Now, these days, Foley has no business in a ring, and it shows.  Mercifully this one was short, and the use of thumbtacks made it a fun ending.  But despite Abyss getting the win, the bat was never used.  I guess the mask is coming off soon.  Now, as for the rest of the tournament, I will keep the other rounds winners a secret.  But your second round matchups were The Pope vs Matt Morgan, and Mr Anderson vs Abyss.  I can’t give everything away.  But I will say that I did not really expect how things eventually turned out.  But for sure the final match was a winner.  In fact, it was the final match of the card.    That had more to do with giving the men a break between rounds, but I honestly thought It was better than the World Title match between A.J. Styles and Samoa Joe.  I’ll get to them in a second, but I do want to mention the one low part of the night.  Team 3D vs The Nasty Boys.  I understand that The Nastys are Hogans boys and all, but they really are not very good.  In fact It’s almost painful to watch them lumber around the ring.  Team 3D after all these years can still get the crowd going, and put on a good match, but even they had trouble making these two stiffs look good.  And with the surprise appearance of The Nasty Boys manager at the end of the match, It looks like they will be sticking around.  But lets move on to the World Title Match.  Samoa Joe has finally rid himself of the face paint, and the whole Nation Of Violence thing, and is looking like the Joe of old.  Just a wrecking machine.  On the other hand, we now have A.J., who came out in a Ric Flair type robe, that made him look like a blue chicken, and blonde highlights in his hair.  Thankfully the changes in the looks did not affect his Wrestling ability.  As you would expect, these two had a great match.  With Flair at ringside, you have to expect some kind of funny business now and again, but for the most part it was just a solid effort from two very good Wrestlers.  So, in my opinion I would have to say that this was yet another good PPV from the Hogan/Bischoff team.  very few weak matches, and some twists you might not expect.  The only thing missing was an X-Division match, but thats for two reasons. 1) the tournament, but more importantly 2)  Destination X, is going to be an all X-Division Pay Per View.  Now THAT should be something to see.

A.J. Styles, is NOT the next Ric Flair.

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

For weeks now we have seen the transformation of A.J. Styles, from the most popular and talented Wrestler in TNA; to being Ric Flairs student and a wannabe playboy.  The thing is, I do like the pairing up of the two.  You have Flair, who is always a draw, and almost always entertaining.  And you have A.J., who is the most talented guy in the company.  But the two personalities don’t mix.  The idea of turning A.J. into a heel isn’t so bad itself.  That can be done rather easily.  It’s this whole notion that A.J. can turn himself into the next “Nature Boy” that just does not feel right.  There are rumours that the powers that be, want to totally re-package Styles to the point of having him dye his hair blonde.  To me,  this is totally ridiculous.  The thing that Styles has going for him right now, is the fact that he really does live up to the moniker “phenomenal”  Watching his last few matches, he has gone the route of the cowardly champion.  Taking short cuts, using outside interference, etc..  It hasn’t been much so far, but as this Styles/Flair alliance goes on, I can see it becoming a regular thing.  Because thats how Flair used to operate.  And if you are going to be taught by Flair, and act like Flair, and hell even LOOK like Flair, then I guess you have to Wrestle like him too.  Which is a shame.  I would rather see this partnership cover just a few things.  There is nothing wrong with acting like Flair to a degree.  Wearing the suits, and having the women around outside of the ring is just fine.  Doing the whole Stylin and Profilin thing would actually work well for A.J.  But once you get to the ring, the old A.J. needs to step up, and win the matches the way he always used to.  No running, no cheating,  just showing off that amazing talent, and being better than the other guy.  I have heard this rumour being thrown around, that they would like Flair to remake a version of the Four Horsemen, with A.J. as the Champ, and Flair in the role that J.J. Dillon had.  Now that would definitely be something that could have some very good long term benefits.  I think a perfect fit for a group like that would be, Beer Money, and Matt Morgan.  But that is thinking too far ahead, and It’s still just a rumour.  Back to the point at hand.  As it stands right now, things have not gone too far with A.J. being molded into the next “Nature Boy”  But they need to be careful not to overdo it.  TNA has a very good thing in Styles.  As the old saying goes, If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.  And Please…..No Blonde hair Dye….
